Prescribed Burns Planned in LBL

Officials at Land Between the Lakes say the U.S. Forest Service will be conducting several prescribed burns in the area beginning this month. About 940 acres are included in the prescribed burn plan.

Administrative sites planned for prescribed burns this spring include Hillman Ferry Campground, Piney Campground, the Homeplace 1850s Farm and a portion of the Elk and Bison Prairie. Other areas may also be included.

Prescribed burns are used to reduce the amount of dry materials that could spark uncontrolled fires, especially in high-use areas. They're also a good way to return nutrients back to the soil. Prescribed burns are weather dependent in an effort to reduce the impact of smoke to surrounding communities.
