Lake Barkley Bridge Open Again

It will be a big relief for those who travel to the Murray area using U.S. 68 through Land Between the Lakes. Transportation officials announced early Thursday morning that the Lake Barkley bridge was open again to vehicle traffic. The bridge reopened about 12:45am Thursday morning. The bridge had been closed since 9:00am Tuesday to allow construction crews to set the main span of the new bridge, which is adjacent to the existing structure.

Transportation spokesman Keith Todd says the jacking towers used to lift the arch into place on the new Lake Barkley bridge have been removed, allowing the existing bridge to be opened to normal traffic flow. However, Lake Barkley and the navigation channel remain closed to both commercial tow boat traffic and pleasure boat traffic at the work site. The bridge is at Cumberland River navigation mile point 63.1.
