UPDATE - New Lake Barkley Bridge Opens To Traffic

The first step in opening the new Lake Barkley Bridge in Canton is complete and traffic is moving. At 12:45 traffic on U.S. 68 was halted to allow the construction and transportation crews to set barrels and signs blocking off access to the old two-lane Lake Barkley Bridge. Around 1:45pm westbound traffic officially moved to the new bridge and within 10 minutes eastbound traffic was also moving.

Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd says they had hoped traffic would be stopped for less time than that.

He adds the shift will probably increase traffic.

The next step in the process will be deconstructing the old bridge.

Though work is not finished on the new bridge.

Todd says the bridges, at Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, will be beautiful entrances into Land Between the Lakes and a draw on their own.

Todd expects a ribbon cutting and ceremony to be held once they are ready to open all four lanes of traffic on the bridge, much like was done for the Eggner's Ferry Bridge.
