Most of today has been pretty cloudy as Barry slowly moves closer to the region. Not much has changed from the previous forecast for our area. We still expect waves of rain and a few thunderstorms to move across the region tonight through Tuesday night. Rainfall increases on Monday, especially in far western Kentucky. As the remnants move northeast Monday night into Tuesday night, widespread showers and some thunderstorms will continue across our entire region. Strong to severe thunderstorms are still a possibility. Based on the current forecast track, the heaviest rainfall amounts continue to be focused in southeast Missouri into far west Kentucky and extreme southern Illinois where a flash flood watch remains in effect.
Rainfall totals in the Flash Flood Watch area still look like 3 to 5 inches, while rainfall amounts from 1 to 3 inches are possible across the rest of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and western Kentucky from around the Land Between the Lakes region and eastward. The bulk of the rain for these areas is expected to fall Tuesday through Tuesday night. There is some uncertainty of how quickly the rain moves out on Wednesday, but overall coverage will be diminishing. The remnants of Barry will move northeast of our region Wednesday, and be replaced by a large subtropical ridge that will really heat things up by Thursday and Friday. Heat index readings of 100 degrees or higher may be possible and may be the beginnings of a heat wave. Did I say how much I dislike summer…
