2019 Trigg County Farm Tour Focused On Hemp

Agricultural hemp from the farm to the consumer was the focus of the 2019 Trigg County Farm Tour.

Farmers and other community members who attended the 2019 tour learned about the challenges of growing agricultural hemp from tobacco farmer Todd Harton. He said he and partner Joseph Sisk began experimenting with hemp four years ago.

Farm tour participants also had a chance to see the processing side of the agricultural hemp industry at Vertical Wellness in Cadiz. Dave Plaster said the Cadiz facility will take the plant from the field to a product that can be placed on the shelf.

Plaster says the Cadiz facility is currently processing about 1,000 pounds of biomass per day but plans to expand to process 8 to 10,000 pounds of biomass per day. He anticipates the Cadiz manufacturing facility will process as much as 35 million pounds of hemp during the next growing season.

Trigg County Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander says Thursday was a perfect example of what the farm tour is about.
