Motorists who plan to travel Interstate 24 in Trigg, Caldwell, and Lyon counties over the Memorial Day holiday need to aware an extended work zone will remain up.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd tells the News Edge they normally try to take down as many work zones as they can during holiday travel weekends. He adds there is no way to take down the barrier wall in the westbound lanes of I-24, but the good news for eastbound motorists traveling from Paducah to Nashville there are a limited number of restrictions.

Todd says they were initially concerned about a high traffic volume creating travel delays, but the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced traffic congestion in the work zones.

He adds AAA has predicted travel would be significantly reduced due to the virus. Todd says they pulled the instant traffic count that showed traffic was down in the latter part of March.

In addition, Todd says truckers need to be aware the westbound work zone includes a maximum 15-foot load width restriction due to the use of the centerline barrier wall. He adds there will be marked exit points for westbound loads that exceed this 15-foot width.

According to Todd, this work zone also includes a strictly-enforced 55 mile per hour speed limit with an enhanced enforcement presence.

As work progresses, eastbound traffic is expected to be restricted to one-lane sometime in early-June creating a 12-foot load width restriction for eastbound trucks through the remainder of the construction season.
