Second Man Dies After Guthrie Explosion

A second man died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Monday after an explosion at a Guthrie business Wednesday afternoon.

Todd County Emergency Management says 21-year-old Alex Wix of Westmoreland, Tennesse, who was driving a truck for Onsite Environmental died at the hospital from his injuries.

The explosion occurred Wednesday afternoon as a waste hauling truck driven from Onsite Environmental was removing a lye solution from a holding tank at Quick Turn Anodizing on Second Street in Guthrie shortly before 1:00. A failed seam in the truck resulted in the explosion that resulted in the end cap being blown more than 100 feet into a vacant lot and another portion of the tank being blown through the building.

The explosion also resulted in the death of 34-year-old Bryan Bonilla of Clarksville and severely injured Guthrie city employee and Trenton firefighter Benn Stahl and President of Quick Turn Anodizing J. Lee Powell.

Stahl was released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center Saturday evening. Stahl suffered burns to his face and upper chest area. He also sustained chemical burns to his eyes, esophagus, and mouth during the explosion.

Powell has also been released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is at home recovering from his injuries. A third employee of Quick Turn Anodizing was also treated at Tennova Healthcare for minor injuries on the day of the explosion.
