The Hopkinsville City Council recently recognized its 2023 Mayor’s Scholars, celebrating the accomplishments of the top 10 chosen from a worthy and tough pool of candidates.
This is the 11th year of the Mayor’s Scholars program, launched as part of the city’s “Partners in Education” efforts.
A county-wide competition, these 10 students earned cash prizes ranging from $25 for those essays judged second through 10th place, and $50 for the first place essay.

In order to be named a Mayor’s Scholar, eighth grade students must have a 2.5 GPA, a 95% attendance rate, have no office referrals, and submit an essay based on a theme — which this year was focused on the most pressing issues they face, along with suggestions on how to address those concerns.
These 10 students, along with many others who fulfilled the standard requirements, will enjoy a day-long field trip to Murray State University’s main campus next month.
