HPD Community Perception Survey Results For 2019 Released

One day after the formation of the Hopkinsville Gun Crimes Task Force was announced, the Hopkinsville Police Department on Wednesday released the results of its third survey of the public’s perception of police performance in providing safety to residents. Nearly 400 individuals responded to the survey conducted from June 20 through August 18, 2019.

During the day, Police Chief Clayton Sumner says the survey showed 93 percent of respondents felt safe while shopping, up 7.5 percent from the previous year, while 88 percent at community event felt safe at community events, up 3.9%. Eighty-two percent felt safe walking in neighborhoods, up 1.9 percent, while 82 percent also felt safe in downtown Hopkinsville, up 1.3 percent.

The survey responses also showed 77 percent believe Hopkinsville police are impartial and treat individuals fairly when enforcing the law, up 4.6 percent, and 73 percent would recommend the city as a safe place to live and raise a family. Eleven percent reported being a victim of property crime in the year, which was down 7.7 percent, and 2.2 percent reported being a victim of violent crime in the year, which was down 8.8 percent.

Chief Sumner added that despite these promising results, the department continues to double down on violent and other crime within the community.
