Following the region’s coldest weather snap since February, forecasters say warmer weather and rain can be expected for this week.
Keith Cooley, a lead forecaster for the National Weather Service, says the weather will warm into the 50s this week and bring with it some rain and maybe a thunderstorm on Thursday.
Cooley says around half an inch to 1 inch of rain is possible across western Kentucky.
A frontal boundary moving through after Thursday’s rain will drop Friday’s weather into the 30s, but warm back into the 50s over the weekend.
Cooley says any precipitation this week will be in the form of rain and adds not to expect a white Christmas this year.
Cooley also says there is a chance of rain coming after Christmas.
Sunday’s low temperature in the single digits was the lowest since February 21, when the mercury hovered around zero. The sub-zero wind chill was also the lowest since February 20.
Through the first half of the month, the average temperature of 32 degrees would barely crack the top 10 coldest Decembers on record. However, the warming trend will raise that average.
The December average temperature the past two years has been 42 degrees, according to the Kentucky Mesonet.
