A woman was charged with abandonment of a minor after a 6-year-old was found in the cold on Moores Court in Hopkinsville on Monday afternoon.
Hopkinsville Police say they were called for a 6-year-old who was found in the cold wandering in a parking lot at 26-degree temperatures wearing summer clothing and asking for a ride to his grandmother’s.
The child was reportedly taken to the police department after several attempts to find the child’s guardian.
Police say the child told law enforcement his mother, 24-year-old Aniyah Lewis, leaves him alone frequently, and he was hungry and had no food.
The Department of Community-Based Services was called and petitioned the court for temporary custody, and the juvenile was later released to his grandmother.
The child was reportedly found at 5:19 pm, and Lewis showed up at the Police Department and was arrested at 8:16 pm.
Police say a citizen who found the juvenile let the child stay in their vehicle to stay warm while waiting for police. Lewis is charged with abandonment of a minor.
