Four Fiscal Court Seats Among Six Christian County Primary Races

Two county-wide offices and four seats on the Christian County Fiscal Court will see opposition on the May Primary ballot following Friday’s filing deadline.

Tyler DeArmond is seeking a third term as sheriff and will face opposition from Hopkinsville Police Department Deputy Chief Erik Pacheco.

The county will have a new property valuation administrator for the first time in 17 years, as Angie Strader announced she would not seek a fifth term. She was appointed PVA in 2009 by then-Governor Steve Beshear, following Mills Foster’s retirement.

Republicans Amber Ezell and Tabitha Strader have filed for the PVA office.

Half of the eight seats on the Christian County Fiscal Court will also see primary races.

Republican George Barnett is seeking a second term from District 3 and will face opposition from Tana Loden.

Rich Liebe opted not to seek a fourth term from District 5, opening the door for a three-way primary race between Austin Crawford, Virginia Erxleben, and former Hopkinsville City Councilman Jonathan Zordel.

Russ Guffey replaced Jerry Gilliam from District 7 after Gilliam was elected Christian County Judge-executive in 2022. Now Guffey is seeking a higher office after one term on the fiscal court, having filed to run for Hopkinsville mayor.

Republicans Todd Morris and John Heltsley have filed to run for the district’s seat.

John Bruce is seeking a second term on the fiscal court from District 8 and will see opposition from Lucas Stagner.

Magaline Ferguson, the lone Democrat serving on the fiscal court, is unopposed for a third term on the governing body.

Josh Turner from District 2 and J.E. Pryor from District 4 are both unopposed for second terms on the fiscal court, while Philip Peterson is unopposed for a third term from District 6.

There are three constable races that will appear on the ballot — Joshua Paul Gydesen and Glenn Rickard in District 3; Sherry Byerline and Richard Leavell in District 7; and Brian Diamond and Jeff Newton in District 8.

Judge-executive Jerry Gilliam, County Attorney Lincoln Foster, County Clerk Melinda Humphries, Jailer Adam Smith, Coroner Scott Daniel, and Surveyor Bill Chaudoin are unopposed.

Tuesday, June 2, is the deadline to file for Independent candidates and non-partisan offices such as mayor and council for the small county cities, as well as the Christian County School Board.

Write-in candidates have until August 24 to appear on the November general election ballot.

A drawing for the order of names on the primary ballot will be Thursday at 2:00.

The deadline to register to vote in the May 19 primary election is April 20.
