Six Trigg County Offices To See Contested Races in May Primary

The May primary election in Trigg County will see three contested races for seats on the fiscal court and three for county-wide offices.

When Friday's deadline passed, two people had filed for District 3 magistrate. Jon Goodwin, who represented the district for two terms before losing by 13 votes to Cameron Sumner in 2018, filed to run as did former Cadiz-Trigg County Planning Commissioner Josh Adams. Both are Republicans. Sumner is not seeking a third term from the district, which is comprised mostly of the north side of Cadiz and its adjacent area along Cerulean Road.

Three Republicans are running to replace the lone Democrat on fiscal court. Greg Goodwin, John Hopson, and Trey Lancaster make up the three-way race on the ballot.

Jeff Broadbent, the lone Democrat on the governing body, is not seeking a fifth term.

Republicans Ricky Clark and Jonathan Paul Shemwell are seeking the seat from District 5. Alana Baker-Dunn, the only woman to serve as a Trigg County magistrate, announced she would not be seeking a third term.

Four other magistrates — all Republicans — were the lone candidates to file in their districts.

Mike Wright is seeking a fifth term from District 1, as is Barry Littlejohn from District 2. Pat Bush is seeking a second term from District 6, and Mike Lane is running for a third term from District 7.

Three county offices will also see contested races in the primary.

Judge-executive Stan Humphries will see opposition from challenger Sam Carter.

Incumbent jailer James Hughes has opposition from Troy Belt, and Sheriff Aaron Acree faces opposition from Mike Sandbrink. All are Republicans.

County Clerk Carmen Finley, PVA Lauren Fowler, County Attorney Randall Braboy, Coroner John Mark Vinson, and Surveyor Matthew Clark have no immediate opposition following Friday's deadline.

Tuesday June 2 is the deadline to file for Independent candidates and non-partisan offices such as mayor of Cadiz, city council, and the Trigg County School Board. Write-in candidates have until August 24 to appear on the November general election ballot.

A drawing for the order of names on the primary ballot will be Thursday at 2:00.

The deadline to register to vote in the May 19 primary election is April 20.
