Book And Bottle Shop Launching Literary Magazine

The Book & Bottle Shop, a unique bookstore and wine bar located in downtown Hopkinsville, Kentucky, is set to launch a new literary magazine titled By the Glass. This publication aims to celebrate the artistry and creativity of writers from the Western Kentucky region.

Founded by the shop’s Draft & Drink Writers Group, By the Glass seeks to showcase a diverse array of literary works, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and other forms. Submissions for the inaugural issue, slated for release in Spring 2026, are now open and will be accepted through April 1, 2026. The exact release date will be announced once the number of submissions is finalized.

Rachel Sanders, owner of The Book & Bottle Shop and Editor-in-Chief of By the Glass, emphasized the magazine’s mission to provide publishing opportunities for local writers. “When we began meeting regularly with our writers’ group at the shop, one of the main goals voiced was to increase access to publishing avenues and opportunities for group members to share their work,” Sanders stated. “We quickly came to the concept of creating our own literary magazine to act as a bridge for local writers and authors to access publication. The vision naturally grew to encompass a wider regional need.”

Submissions are open to original, unpublished works from individuals connected to Western Kentucky. The submission criteria are intentionally broad to promote inclusion while maintaining the focus on the region. As the submission form notes, “If you can make the argument, we will accept the connection.”

The first issue does not have a specific theme, encouraging writers to submit polished pieces that exemplify their skills. Submissions can be made online at https://www.thebookandbottleshop.com/bytheglass through April 1, 2026.

Sanders highlighted the magazine’s role in complementing existing literary publications in the state. “There are many literary journals and magazines based throughout the state, though most are associated with universities or other educational establishments,” she said. “Our goal is not to duplicate or encroach on the existing publications, but instead to create a supplementation and expansion specific to our region of the state.”

Since its opening in November 2024, The Book & Bottle Shop has become a community hub, offering a curated selection of new and used books, high-quality wines, and hosting various events. The Draft & Drink Writers Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month for workshops, discussions, and writing exercises. Additionally, the shop hosts quarterly open mic poetry nights to showcase local talent. The next open mic night is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, at 6:00 PM.
