The Kentucky League of Cities’ new “Cities Drive Kentucky” specialty license plate is now in production and available for purchase online. Plates entered production February 27 and are expected to arrive at county clerk’s offices statewide next month.

Proceeds from the plate will benefit the KLC Cities Helping Cities Fund, a disaster-relief initiative designed to help Kentucky cities respond quickly to natural disasters such as tornadoes, flooding, hail and severe storms. The fund provides immediate assistance to impacted cities so they can stabilize operations, support first responders and begin recovery efforts without delay.

KLC President and Paul Sandefur said cities are often the first to respond after a disaster, and disruptions to utilities, public safety and city facilities affect entire communities — not just city residents. He called the specialty plate a meaningful way for Kentuckians to support their cities when help is needed most.

KLC Executive Director and CEO J.D. Chaney said cities “truly drive Kentucky” and thanked the Kentucky Department of Transportation for partnering to offer the new plate as another approach to disaster recovery.

According to KLC Insurance data, the need for disaster response continues to grow. Between 2021 and early 2026, storms and flooding caused tens of millions of dollars in damage to cities across the state. In 2025 alone, damages exceeded $22 million.

The Kentucky League of Cities is a nonprofit organization that provides advocacy, legal services, training, financing and consulting to cities statewide. KLC Insurance is the largest municipal insurance agency in Kentucky.
