Cadiz-Trigg County’s Tourist Commission opened April and the spring season with two points of action Thursday afternoon — making decisions regarding fiscal responsibility and America’s upcoming 250th birthday and ensuing July celebration.
Executive Director Beth Sumner suggested that a $25,000 CD, one purchased in 2023, be moved into their FNB Bank municipal money market fund, in order to simplify accounting. Board members agreed.
The deposit, she said, did make around $2,500 interest over the last two years, and it matured this past weekend. If it had been renewed, she said it would have been at 3.7% interest for the next six months.
Meanwhile, board members also approved for Sumner to sign a contract locking in a $15,000 cost for fireworks from Pyro Shows the July 3 celebration at Lake Barkley Beach near Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
Though it is a 10% increase from previous performances, Sumner said earlier contracts would have been tagged with a 5% tariff fee, so this price did come down over time.
In other tourism news:
+ As Cadiz and Trigg County continues to rally around the nine lost Fort Campbell soldiers, and the growing Trigg County Veterans Memorial Park, Sumner said the location will eventually become a stop not only for families of the fallen, but a place of learning and local students and visitors alike.
As such, her office will begin assisting in some of the front-facing efforts needed for information and awareness.
+ Sumner confirmed that this quarter has been robust with several purchases of digital ads, a new billboard wrap on I-24 and some other mediums.
However, she said a new digital ad with Style Blueprint — alongside a year-long calendar of the best food, music and cultural festivals in the south — could go a long way for Cadiz and Trigg County.
+ Sumner said there will be a ribbon cutting at 1:30 PM Tuesday, April 7, for the new Trigg County Recreation Complex concession stand, which is opening just as local baseball and softball teams finish up their first third of their seasons.
At the same time, officials will also recognize the second designed pig — “Trigger” — which is a sports accompaniment to “Cadi,” who proudly sits in front of the Persnickety Pig near I-24.
+ No action was taken, but Thursday’s meeting did close in executive session, in order to discuss a project at a specific location, that could otherwise be jeopardized in open forum.
