Rain Is Helping But Not Eliminating Drought Conditions

This week’s weather has brought much-needed rainfall to the area, but it is not expected to completely eliminate drought conditions.

Meteorologist Rachel Trevino says that once the rain moves through, we’ll see a cooldown, with temperatures running 8 to 12 degrees below normal on Wednesday and Thursday. Conditions are expected to return to more typical May temperatures by the weekend. She says rain chances will decrease late in the week, though isolated showers and thunderstorms could return on Sunday.

As of late last week, the latest U.S. Drought Monitor placed much of the region in the moderate to severe level.

Some areas of Christian County continue to experience some of the more severe conditions in the region, with some reaching extreme drought levels.

Trigg County and Caldwell County were in the moderate-to-severe drought range.

About 62% of the Paducah forecast area is in at least moderate drought, with nearly all areas experiencing some level of dryness. Statewide, about 90% of Kentucky is experiencing drought conditions.

While this week’s rain is not expected to completely eliminate drought conditions, it should provide some improvement.
