During Monday morning’s Christian County Fiscal Court meeting, Clerk Melinda Humphries reminded constituents of the upcoming Primary election — which is slated for Tuesday, May 19.

But more importantly, she said early voting is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Those seeking an easier route than waiting until next week have options.

Questions about the primary — which opens voting to those registered as Democrat or Republican only, and not Independents — can be directed to the office’s Facebook page, or by visiting in person at 511 South Main Street in Hopkinsville.

In other fiscal court news:

+ Mack Major, of Higgins Insurance, brought forth strong and positive news regarding the county’s health insurance renewal, offering three recommendations based on recent review of the marketplace.

Among them, and due to a surplus, is not changing any of the benefits in the medical, dental and vision programs.

+ Crofton Elementary’s Abigail Vargas was sworn in to serve a one-day term as judge-executive, bringing new leadership to Christian County.

+ Retired Christian County Public Schools bus driver “Momma” Jane Davis was also given a meritorious service award, following more than 50 years at the wheel, and more than 1 million miles driven.

+ Diane Croney-Turner, of Jeffers Bend, confirmed the 25th “Take Kids Fishing” event is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, with a fee of $2 per child, which provides a T-shirt and a meal.

When children get tired of fishing, she said there will be other things for families to do — like obstacle courses, hayrides to other locations on the campus, and more.

First responders and military families get in free.

+ Oak Grove Mayor Jackie Oliver noted that “Spring Into Summer” is coming up “real soon,” planned for Saturday, May 23. Held near War Memorial Walking Trail Park, it is free to attend, including parking, concerts, shows and carnival rides.

This year’s headliner is Brett Young, performing at 7 PM on the Viceroy Stage, and Oliver said a drone show will follow, so families should stick around for it.

On Monday, May 25, at Oak Grove Racing & Gaming, it’s the “Wiener Dog Races,” with proceeds always going to a good cause.

Then, on July 25 from 3-9 PM at Valor Hall Conference and Event Center, there will once again be the “Bands, Bourbon & Wine” Festival, which includes local adult beverage favorites such as MB Roland, Casey Jones Distillery and Dueling Grounds Distillery. The “Bourbon & Brakes” Car Show is rolling along with it, and taking free entries.

Meanwhile, Oak Grove, she said, has been bustling with new business in the last six weeks.

+ Jada Morris, administrative assistant for the Hopkinsville-Christian County Human Rights Commission, said cases are slightly up from this time last year, going from 38 in Spring 2025 to 43 right now.

+ And Gilliam offered the first reading of the 2026-27 fiscal year budget, which in total comes to nearly $61 million. Second reading is expected in mid-June.
