Despite opposition from residents, Hopkinsville City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to raise the pay for next year’s council members. Tuesday night, several residents took to the podium during public comments, including former councilwoman Jamie Lienberger.

Officials say the recommendation is designed to bring Hopkinsville in line with the average pay across the state for similar positions. State statute allows for the position to pay up to $95,000, the same as the mayor.

Brandi Stallons moved to delay the discussion and vote until March, but that motion failed. Voting in favor of the $8,000 raise for council and the $4,000 raise for the mayor were Amy Craig, Travis Martin, Clayton Sumner, Seth Meek, Brittanie Bogard, Jason Bell, and Vance Smith. Voting no were Don Marsh, Chuck Crabtree, Mike Velez, and Elizabeth Draude. Brandi Stallons abstained.
