With the weather warming up, officials with the Hopkinsville Fire Department are sharing safety tips for this summer.

Hopkinsville Fire Department Spokesman Captain Payton Rogers says seasonally, 5 to 15% of our fire calls between April and September are for grilling incidents with grills that catch fire or that are too close to flammable materials.”

While pool-related incidents are significantly lower, Rogers says they have had 3 to 4 over the last several years.

Grilling Tips:

1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from flammable materials.

2. Don’t let children near a hot grill or leave them unattended near the grill.

3. Clean any grease off the grill to keep from having flare-ups.

4. Avoid wearing loose clothing while cooking.

5. Keep a fire extinguisher near the grilling area.

Pool Safety:

1. Children should never be left unattended around a swimming pool

2. In-ground pools should have a fence around them with a locking gate.

3. Remove the ladder from above-ground pools to keep children from being able to access the pool.

4. Have someone trained in CPR, first aid, and keep rescue equipment nearby.

5. Never dive into pools that are not built with the proper depth.

Rogers says anyone who is interested in CPR and or first aid classes can check with the American Red Cross or email him at payton.rogers@hopkinsvilleky.us
