Hundreds of families filled DeBow Recreation Complex on Saturday morning for Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation’s 10th annual Touch-A-Truck event, where children had the chance to climb aboard emergency vehicles, heavy equipment and military machinery while learning about the people who operate them.

The free community event, held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., featured dozens of vehicles from local first responders, utility companies, construction crews, agricultural organizations and military personnel. Fire trucks, police cruisers, tow trucks, tractors, semi-trucks and ambulances lined the park as children explored the equipment, sounded horns and met operators from participating agencies.

Organizers said the annual event is designed to provide hands-on educational opportunities while creating a family-friendly atmosphere that introduces children to careers in public service, transportation, agriculture and construction. Long lines formed throughout the morning around several of the larger vehicles, while families gathered for photos and demonstrations across the recreation complex.

A sensory-friendly hour was held during the final portion of the event from noon to 1 p.m., during which sirens, flashing lights and loud noises were minimized to create a more comfortable environment for children and adults with sensory sensitivities. A sensory support area was also available onsite.

Touch-A-Truck has become one of Hopkinsville Parks and Recreation’s signature annual events and regularly draws large crowds from across Christian County and surrounding communities. This year marked the event’s 10th anniversary celebration as the city continues expanding family-oriented programming throughout the year.
